The more that is revealed of Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the more obvious it becomes that the thing is directly parodying the life of Justin Bieber. In the film’s newest trailer, the titular popstar, Conner4Real goes to the bathroom in the Anne Frank house and has a pet turtle, echoing Bieber’s pet monkey and his own trip to Anne Frank’s house, where Bieber said she would’ve been a fan.
We also hear a snippet of a new song, maybe titled “Mona Lisa,” which goes, “Mona Lisa was the original basic bitch.” (Rhyme scheme notwithstanding, that is a dope line.) Real-life singer, but not quite popstar, Seal makes a violent appearance at the wedding between Conner and some socialite. And though it’s difficult to discern any kind of plot from this joke-after-joke trailer, it seems that after Rolling Stone offers Conner’s latest album a “shit emoji” rating, his career might be in the dumps.
Popster: Never Stop Never Stopping looks to be an appropriately absurd, scattershot piece of filmmaking from the Lonely Island boys, and the trailer sheds little light on what the thing could actually be about, but, hey, it’s still a ton of fun, so go ahead and watch it below.
