Fresh from the creators of Zootopia and Frozen, the first teaser trailer for the new Disney flick Moana features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a charismatic Polynesian demigod, Maui. Set in the South Pacific, the story follows Maui and his pal Moana, the protagonist played by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho.
With his magical fishhook, Maui is a well-known presence in Hawaiian mythology, akin to the likes of Greek hero Hercules. The trailer opens with Maui describing his vast powers and capabilities, from pulling islands from beneath the sea to slowing down the sun. After putting on somewhat of a spectacle, Moana calmly sits, unimpressed with his antics.
The soundtrack for the film was scored by Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Hamilton creator and recent recipient of Best Score of a Musical at last night’s Tonys. Directing Duo Ron Clements and John Musker, who have directed many of Disney’s classics including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and most recently The Princess and The Frog, are directing Moana. It’s their first primarily computer-animated film.
Unsurprisingly, this is Disney’s first film to star Polynesian characters, and it looks pretty good, too.
