Hello there, moviegoer! Did you love Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, but come away thinking, Man, all that father and son stuff was great, but if only there had been more of those dinosaurs and stars and suns and stuff? Well, boy do I have the movie for you.
Malick has reportedly spent something like four decades working on the experimental documentary Voyage of Time, breathlessly described as a “one-of-a-kind celebration of life and the grand history of the cosmos, transporting audiences into a vast yet up-close-and personal journey that spans the eons from the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world … and beyond.” The film will reportedly hit theaters in two versions: the 90-minute Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, narrated by Cate Blanchett, and the 40-minute large-format adaptation Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, narrated by Brad Pitt.
Now IMAX has released the first trailer for the latter film, and well, it sure does look Malick-y!
I’m gonna make a bold prediction here, without even seeing this film: if you find Terrence Malick to be a visionary genius working light years ahead of his contemporaries, Voyage of Time will probably confirm that notion for you. And if you find Terrence Malick to be a pretentious, inert pretty-picture maker verging on self-parody, Voyage of Time will probably confirm that notion as well. Find out for sure when Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience hits those giant screens on October 7th.
