The powerful new poster for first-time filmmaker Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation, which debuted on Tidal, shows his character Nat Turner being hung by an American flag noose. The Beyond the Lights actor wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the film, which our own Jason Bailey called “a confident, assured piece of filmmaking” and “a vital, stirring, and powerful film by and about people of color – [which] arrives like a hand grenade in the midst of a deafeningly loud discussion about why that’s such a rarity in contemporary Hollywood.”

In The Birth of a Nation, Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the antebellum South — whose talents are used by his master to quell an insurrection amongst slaves — orchestrates an uprising. The Sundance favorite, which is set to hit theaters on October 7, won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize.
