Big news (for Tatiana Maslany and/or polar bear fans): there will soon be a movie in which Orphan Black‘s impressively versatile Tatiana Maslany sustains one character for more than five minutes at a time (and also incidentally features a polar bear.) Not that there was any doubt about her ability to do so — it’s just that the frenetic clone sci-fi drama for which she’s become famous has basically allowed her to achieve everything an actor could hope to do, with the exception of playing one character, limited to one body, across a long and focused period. The first trailer for the aforementioned movie, called Two Lovers and a Bear, was released this morning, and can be viewed below.
The film, directed by Kim Nguyen (who wrote and helmed War Witch, nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film), is about two lovers (played by Maslany and Dane DeHaan) who have vaguely bleak pasts both involving (seemingly nightmarishly) dysfunctional relationships with their fathers, and met after coming to a tiny Arctic town for escape.
It’ll screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and already premiered earlier this year at Cannes. Variety‘s Peter Debruge wrote of the film:
Here in this incredible location, Nguyen actively encourages our imaginations to go wild, teasing anxieties that typically only come out in the most effective horror movies.
