The final episode of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” saluted its audience with humor, nostalgic melancholy, and a visit from Jon Stewart himself. Stewart swooped in like a bearded rabbi of late night arriving in casual clothes to bestow a last-minute benediction on Wilmore (who started out as the Senior Black Correspondent on Stewart’s Daily Show).
“Do not confuse cancellation with failure,” Stewart told Wilmore, reminding him of the frank and occasionally difficult topics the show had taken on, “keeping it 100” every time. “You started a conversation that was not on television when you began.”
The rest of the broadcast’s highlights included a tally of which other late night show sent the best booze (and which sent mere pastries— watch below to find out) and a bit in which Wilmore tried to get ahold of his many correspondents and they all declared themselves previously occupied with skyping, being on vacation, or in bed with each other.
It was nice to see Stewart back on TV, but it hardly took the sting away. The Nightly Show will be missed.
