This bit of news from the desk of NBC is totally weirdsville, yet not completely unexpected. Variety reports that the network will be creating a “sexy, contemporary” version of the Charles Dickens’ tale Oliver Twist. If that weren’t enough, NBC will set the story around a 20-something young woman who “finally finds a true sense of family in a strange group of talented outcasts who use their unique skills to take down wealthy criminals.” The series, tentatively titled Twist, is currently in development. The original tale, of course, centers on the eponymous orphaned child protagonist who is sent to a workhouse where he’s forced to beg for food and is beaten — you know, cheery stuff that will now be sexualized by a major network that should know better.
