Alexis Arquette, LGBT activist and one of the earliest public transgender celebrities, has died. She was only 47. “He was surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters, one of his nieces and several other loved ones,” reads a Facebook update from the star’s brother Richmond Arquette. “We were playing music for him and he passed during David Bowie’s ‘Starman.’ As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension.” The cause of death has been reported as an “illness.” The actress was the subject of the Matthew Barbato documentary She’s My Brother, which chronicled her sex reassignment surgery.
