Pussy Riot have released a new song and music video titled “Straight Outta Vagina” — both 0f which celebrate, nay, worship the vagina, with in-your-face (literally; the camera’s lens gets very close and personal with some blue-dyed — or merkin-ed — crotches) politicized feminist humor.
With its release within a social climate where misogyny is being openly vocalized by an American presidential candidate and his vile attitudes (and apparent actions) towards women, the song is funny/biting (with lyrics like “If your vagina lands in prison, then the whole world’s going to listen”) and immediately relevant. The track features verses from Desi Mo and Leikeli47, and was made with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek.
The video cheekily recalls the very known recent history of Pussy Riot. It sees member Nadya Tolokonnikova (the activist/conceptual artist/Pussy Riot member who was among those imprisoned for over a year after their famous performance in a Moscow Cathedral in 2012) approach a young girl clutching a cross in prayer in a cathedral. She’s wearing clerical garb and the Pussy Riot balaclava; Tolokonnikova hands the girl a small pink candy in replacement for sacramental bread, and from there the girl is, herself, transformed into a Pussy Riot member. The video takes off from there, with a Pussy Riot party erupting in a large theater (and its bathroom).
The song is part of Adult Swim’s 2016 Singles Club, wherein 25 new tracks are released over the course of 25 weeks (the last one was Run the Jewels’ “Talk to Me.”)
