‘Mr. Robot’s’ Rami Malek to Play Freddie Mercury in Biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

We’re still pretty devastated that Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out of the long-in-devleopment-hell Freddie Mercury biopic, but Variety reports that Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is now attached to play the late musician in the film Bohemian Rhapsody — resurrecting our interest in this project once more. Bryan Singer (X-Men: Apocalypse), who is currently attached to direct the biopic, shared news of Malek’s involvement on Instagram. The Theory Of Everything’s Anthony McCarten will write the script. Malek recently took home a Best Actor Emmy for his USA series and celebrated a starring role in September’s Buster’s Mal Heart. Bohemian Rhapsody has been eight years in the making, with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor attached as music producers. The musicians felt original lead Sacha Baron Cohen would be “distracting.” Will the Queen/Malek relationship last?
