In news we knew we would one day have to report, and yet hoped that somehow it would never be so, Leonard Cohen has died. The news was posted on Cohen’s official Facebook page earlier this evening. No cause of death has yet been reported; the post simply relates the news and notes that “a memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date.” Cohen was 82, and as related in David Remnick’s marvelous profile for The New Yorker last month, had been in ill health for quite some time. It’s hard to know quite what else to say about this; perhaps we will have more tomorrow, but for now, all we can say is that the world has lost one of its truly great artists, a writer and poet without peer, and a spirit as generous to match. Rest in peace, Leonard Cohen. God bless you.
