Eye-Popping Geometric Portraits of Pop Culture Icons

Madrid-based artist Okuda San Miguel makes his US solo debut at Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery. Mayan Renaissance, open through April 29, features an eye-popping series of multi-media works, including vibrant enamel paintings, sculpture, and tapestries. Okuda is best known for his shockingly colored murals and his conversion of an abandoned Spanish church named Kaos Temple, which the artist has called his “personal Sistine Chapel.” We took notice of Okuda’s older works, featuring geometric versions of pop culture icons and other famous faces including Tupac Shakur, Die Antwoord (his portrait of Yolandi is featured in the new exhibition), Kanye West, Obama, and Donald Trump. Take a closer look in our gallery.
