It is no surprise at all to learn that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has moved past the Amazon pilot stage and been approved for a full season. It is a little surprising, however, that the streaming service has green-lit the hour-long comedy-drama hybrid set in late-1950s Greenwich Village for two seasons, based on just one episode.
As Flavorwire noted when Amazon released its latest batch of pilots last month, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the immediate standout. Rachel Brosnahan stars as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a chipper, sardonic, and decidedly Jewish Upper West Side housewife whose ad-man husband fancies himself a budding standup comedian. But it’s Midge who turns out to be the real talent onstage, and she winds up taking the clubs and coffee houses of Greenwich Village by storm on her way to Johnny Carson’s couch. Alex Borstein plays the butch owner of the famed Gaslight Cafe.
The pilot is so delightful, and apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so: It’s garnered an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars, with 92 percent of voters giving it the full five. It’s no wonder Amazon approved a whopping two seasons of the show, the first time it’s ordered multiple seasons of a new series. Mazel Tov, Amy! We’re kvelling.
