Promoting the compilation collection Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 1984-2014, Cave and his un-good grains appeared last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and performed the Skeleton Tree track “Rings of Saturn.” The track is one of the less overtly crushing songs off the exquisite but tough album. Though the lyrics make use eerie descriptive language, illustrating the likes of “a black oily gash crawling backwards across the carpet to smash all over everything,” “Rings of Saturn” is actually laced with synthesized sounds of somewhat dizzied levity (it’s reminiscent of a lot of Spiritualized’s work), with a backup singer drunkenly millennial whooping after each line of the chorus. And it happens to sound great live. Watch:
