Southern Gothic Fashion in Pop Culture

The Southern Gothic genre is a rich space for authors and filmmakers to play where the grotesque, eccentric, and atmospheric thrive. Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, her pastel-colored remake of Clint Eastwood’s film of the same name, hit theaters this weekend. We recently read an interview with the film’s costume designer Stacey Battat, who discussed the intricate details Coppola wanted for the movie’s fashion (about 90 percent of the costumes were made by hand, for example). Inspired by Coppola’s sartorial choices, we created a visual diary that shows how other directors styled actors and performers in Southern Gothic-inspired stories throughout pop culture.
