When reports came out that Mahershala Ali was in early talks to star in Season 3 of True Detective, it seemed like it could just be wishful thinking for a show that — after a deeply unimpressive and far less viewed second season — raised questions about whether it’d even get a third. Turns out: not just wishful thinking! As Entertainment Weekly reports from the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Ali has indeed made a deal to star in the next season. All signs point to the fact that the season itself will happen, but apparently HBO is still in search of directors before it gets an official green light.
That said, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys said at the TCA press tour, “I have read five scripts for a third season. I’m very very impressed and excited about what I’ve read. I don’t want to give away the storyline, but I really think they’re terrific.”
Ali himself announced the news on Instagram:
Before you catch him in True Detective, though, you’ll be able to see hear him in a very different show named “_ Detective” – Comrade Detective, the upcoming dubbed ’80s Romanian Communist propaganda spoof show from Amazon/A24/Free Association.
