Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar Form an Undying Allegiance in “LOYALTY” Video

The video for Kendrick Lamar’s Rihanna collaboration, Loyalty, was just released, and, as has been the case with most 0f Kendrick’s DAMN. videos thus far, it creates a crisp, visceral and surreal vision. It never quite reaches the casually crazy heights of Kendrick’s fire-head in “HUMBLE,” but it comes pretty damn close. It’s aided of course by Rihanna’s dauntless confidence, even as, in the video, she clings to Kendrick’s arm at the top of a building or laughingly survives a car crash.

Indeed, the video sees them enduring (and perhaps seeking) a number of life-threatening situations together, beginning after Kendrick’s character beats a guy up on Rihanna’s character’s behalf. (The chivalry would be annoying, if Rihanna’s own thorough enjoyment weren’t such a big part of it.) From there, Rihanna and Kendrick play a trust game wherein Rihanna dangles off the top of a skyscraper, holding only Kendrick’s arm; they also sink into a quicksand-like street that we ultimately see is full of sharks; and finally, there’s the car crash that finishes it, though they survive, as mentioned, exhilarated.

The video was directed by the same group of talents behind “Humble” — Dave Meyers and The Little Homies (Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar).
