From L’Enfant to The Kid With a Bike to Two Days, One Night, Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne have been making understated dramas with startling emotional and moral heft for quite some time — and their latest, The Unknown Girl, looks to follow suit, though there’s apparently some noir genre flirtation here. The trailer for the film was just released, in anticipation of a September 8 opening in the U.S.
The Unknown Girl stars Adele Haenel as Jenny Davin, a doctor who doesn’t to give care to a woman who shows up trying to buzz into her practice after hours — and then later turns up dead, and unidentified. When Davin discovers the news, she begins to get obsessed with the dead woman — and the fact that she didn’t help her, and starts investigating her life.
