If you zone out during the opening credits, Scott Frank is one of those names you may not know – but he’s responsible for a whole lot of the past quarter century or so’s truly excellent stuff. He wrote the wonderful nutty Dead Again, penned Malice with Aaron Sorkin, adapted Minority Report for Steven Spielberg, and wrote two of the very best Elmore Leonard adaptations: Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty, and Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight. Now he’s reteamed with Mr. Soderbergh, who is credited as executive producer of Godless, Frank’s new six-episode Netflix western.
The series, which concerns a frontier town populated entirely by women (and the men who try to take advantage of that), boasts a top-flight cast, including Michelle Dockery, Jack O’Connell, Scoot McNairy, Jeff Daniels, Kim Coates, Sam Waterston, Merritt Wever, and Jeff Daniels. And Mr. Frank directed all six episodes himself, which is terrific news if you’ve seen his two feature directorial efforts (The Lookout and A Walk Among the Tombstones), which too damn few of you have.
