When Disobedience unspooled at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival, it quickly became one of the fest’s hot tickets – quite literally, as it concerns a forbidden romance between Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. But that boil-down makes the movie sound quite a bit more exploitative than it is; this is a story of truth and faith (in both the religious and marital senses), anchored with genuine emotional immediacy, with powerful performances by Weisz, McAdams, and the perpetually underrated Alessandro Nivola.

It’s shaping up to be a helluva year for director Sebastián Lelio; his Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, the excellent A Fantastic Woman, is out today in limited release, and Disobedience is out April 27.
