David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, co-creators and show-runners of Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new trilogy of Star Wars stories for Lucasfilm.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
That series is set to conclude in 2019, the same year J.J. Abrams’ conclusion to the current trilogy will hit theaters. Benioff and Weiss’s series will not be tied to that series, nor to the completely different trilogy that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is set to create. Or to Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, out in May.
Anyway, at this point, our best hope is apparently just to hope they decide to do so many Star Wars movies that they eventually have to hire a woman or POC to make one, if for no other reason than they’ve run out of white dudes.
