Tonight the 2010 Winter Olympics open in Vancouver. To celebrate this, Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad and the city to stage “Vectorial Elevation,” an interactive public art installation that allows people around the world to design huge light sculptures via the web that will transform Vancouver’s skyline. Each evening, 20 robotic searchlights located around English Bay will render the designs in sequence. After, a web page is made for each participant with photos of their design from four cameras located around the city.
