Photo Essay: Madagascar’s Illegal Rosewood Trade

When UK-based photojournalist Toby Smith visited Madagascar last year, he was working undercover to document the illegal Rosewood trade that had intensified in the wake of the country’s new interim government. Until recently, his photos — which are the product of three separate expeditions — were embargoed as evidence in international courts. Now, as part of the London International Documentary Festival, Smith will exhibit the work for the first time at the Barbican Mezzanine beginning April 17.
